Redhorse Butte is just another one-horse town dotting the western landscape, but it encompasses Johnny Ackerman's entire past, present and future. Born there, trained as a cowpuncher, he's ready to ask for the hand of the girl he's had his sights on since he was a kid. But dreams can become nightmares...and sometimes lead flies and gun smoke clouds the air. And a man's got to become far more than a cowhand.

Judgment Day edition by Frank Roderus Literature Fiction eBooks

The opening chapter strikes the note: something pretty bad is going to happen. The title helps with that, as well. Then the story unfolds, a simple country story set out West, back in the days of the horse and cart. The young boys in this one-horse town await the arrival of the new school teacher, expecting a beautiful young woman. No-one destined to any of them: a teacher has to be unmarried and "pure". Then comes the first surprise.
Johnny is the nicest of all the boys, exceedingly bashful, well-brought up by honest parents who keep a pretty strict eye on him. This is a place and time when women "have babies and wash (their husband's dirty work clothes)" and when a young lad sets eyes on a girl, this is the kind of life he expects to offer her. But is that what the girls want?
I felt that Roderus really got under the skin of these young lads, and told the story as they would have felt it.

Judgment Day edition by Frank Roderus Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Hear enough of this kind of story in the world today. Just didn't like this book. No offense to the author. I love his other books. Probably just poor timing with the PA school stabbings and finishing this book the same day.
Judgment Day is not the typical shoot em-up western. The story revolves around Billy a young cowpoke working the families ranch and his coming of age. This is my 3rd Frank Roderus book and I haven't got a bad one yet.
I think the reader ought to be warned about the pornography.
Set in a sleepy, one horse, post Civil War, western town. Judgment Day is a coming of age story that if not for the western setting and the vernacular this story could be pulled from today's news. It's easy to see how this talented western writer writer has won multiple spur awards.
Judgment Day by Frank Roderus brought me back to a simpler time; a time before automated answering machines, television advertising and people yelling into their cellphones. It also brought me back to my first love; or at least what I thought was love. Judgment Day is a “coming of age” story set in a small western Montana town, sometime in the nineteenth century.

Johnny Ackerman lives with his parents on a working ranch outside of town. He’s a good boy growing up. He helps with his chores around the ranch and as we get to know him, he seems like someone you would be proud to have for a son. He is likeable and he has manners. The love of his life is Sarah Young. Sarah is attracted to Johnny’s good looks and as they begin spending more time together, Johnny falls deeply in love with Sarah. But Sarah is merely a child. Johnny thinks he knows Sarah but how well can you really know a fifteen year old girl. And how well does Sarah really know Johnny. He is handsome and kind but he does have one very bad quality.

This is the second book I’ve read by author Frank Roderus and I now consider myself a fan. As you enjoy reading Judgment Day, you may begin to see a typical story unfolding. But the story is very far from typical. In fact you probably have never read a western quite like this one. There is some sexual content so I will highly recommend this wonderful western for young adults and older.
This is my 2nd book by Roderus, and I really enjoyed the characters, the family, his friends and the towns people. I couldn't put it down. It is a coming of age story of a young cowboy and his girlfriend who uses him until the end. It has been on my mind ever since I finished the book. Glad I had the chance to get to know Johnny and his family.
I liked this one. Surprise ending, one that I did not expect. Great story, full of intrigue, deception, foolishness and other things that one might imagine the early west, and it's people, to truly be like. Really the story of two people, a young man and an even younger woman, the tragedy that they both cause to befall themselves and their families, and their town. Read this one folks. You won't be disappointed.
